The Halton Catholic District School Board have voted on two names to be the possible replacement for the former Jean Vanier High School in Milton. It has been sent to the bishop at the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hamilton for review. The decided name will be brought before the board of trustees at their next meeting on June 16.

The Halton Catholic District School Board is promising students, of the former Jean Vanier High School in Milton, that they will have a new name by the time they go back in September. The school board decided to change its name after allegations of sexual misconduct against the late Jean Vanier were released in Feb. 2020. The school board has formed a naming committee to help decide what the school's new name should be.

The Halton Catholic District School Board has decided to rename a local high school after an investigation revealed its namesake was allegedly involved in sexual assaults. Jean Vanier, who died in 2019, was the co-founder of L'Arche International, an organization that helps people with developmental disabilities. It was this very organization that conducted the investigation. The full report can be found here.

Meantime, a policy committee with the school board is looking to change a naming policy in what they say is a way to make sure something like this doesn't happen again. We spoke with the vice-chair and Milton board trustee Marvin Duarte and a former student, Angelina Viliani.
