International Transgender Day of Visibility
International Transgender Day of Visibility is celebrated annually on Mar. 31. In this story, Zoe Carey talks about the importance of today. Pflag Halton is hosting a peer support and celebration meeting on Zoom tonight to mark the occasion. It starts at 7pm. China sanctions local Conservative MP
Wellington-Halton Hills MP and foreign affairs critic, Michael Chong is now forbidden to enter China after that country's ministry of foreign affairs announced sanctions on Mar. 27. This comes following MPs voting in favour of Chong's motion to declare China's treatment of the Uyghur people as genocide back in February. The sanctions were also placed on the House of Commons subcommittee on international human rights and other individuals and entities in the US. The sanctions also include prohibiting Chinese citizens and institutions from doing business with those who've been sanctioned.
Government extends Canada Emergency Business Account Program
Milton MP Adam van Koeverden says the government has extended the deadline of the Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA) program. The deadline from March 31 to June 30, 2021. CEBA provides interest-free loans of up to $40,000 to Canadian small businesses and not-for-profits.
Dr. Kalina on successful start to vaccine rollout out
It's been almost a month since vaccinations clinics opened in Halton Region. According to Dr. Dale Kalina, Head of Infection and Prevention Control at Joseph Brant Hospital, it's going very well.
Local teens want to bring back sports in latest campaign
Luka Simeunovic and Will Kiproff are part of the Halton District School Board student senate. The pair have launched a #SafeSports campaign to convince the board to bring back sports to schools.
Elliott assures Halton got its fair share of vaccines
Some Halton residents aren't happy with having to wait until third week of March for those 80+ to get vaccinated. Regional Chair Gary Carr has posted on Twitter accusing the Province of taking Halton's share of the Moderna vaccine and sending it to other regions like Toronto and Peel. Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Christine Elliott says that wasn't the case.
Halton couple on coping with dementia
Leonard Howe was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia in 2016. His wife, Naome, has been by his side every step of the way. Both are eager to share their story in the hopes to erase the stigma around the disease and inspire others to do the same. For more information on dementia, click here.
