Halton Catholic District School Board denies Pride flag
The Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB) passes a motion that does not include flying the Pride flag in June. A special meeting was held on Mon. April 26 to discuss the original motion that would allow the flags along with safe space posters in classrooms during Pride Month. However, the original motion was changed. What eventually passed was a motion that imposes mandatory training for senior staff on the "Catholic School Teaching on loving and accompanying students who identify as 2SLGBTQ+" and excludes the raising of the Pride flag. The outcome has caused a public outcry from those in the 2SLGBTQ+ community and their allies. According to Pflag Halton, plans are in the works to fly Pride flags in and around the HCDSB on June 1.
Pflag Halton lending support for 2SLGBTQ+ students and staff in HCDSB
Pflag Canada is an organization that supports members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community and their families. The Halton Chapter has announced, in a statement, they are disturbed by some of the discussions that occurred at The Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB) meeting on April 20. The HCDSB has a motion on the table to allow the raising of Pride flags outside their schools and safe space posters in classrooms. After nearly three hours of delegations, the HCDSB deferred the motion to a special meeting on Monday, April 26. A petition is also circulating, asking for community support in the raising of the Pride flag at Catholic schools. To view and/or sign the petition click here: https://bit.ly/3aABrEU.
